Sidebar Spotlight: Seminary Co-op

If you live in Chicago—and love books—you already know about the The Seminary Co-op Bookstore. Housed in the basement of a church, this low-ceilinged, warren of books is one of the best academic bookstores in the country.

If you live in the San Francisco Bay Area, imagine the academic selection of Cody’s (defunct) and University Press Books shelved in the labyrinthine style of Green Apple Books and crammed into the basement of City Lights Booksellers with St. Peter and Paul’s Church on top and nestled on the campus of UC Berkeley. Got the picture?

The co-op celebrates its 50th anniversary today and plans to move into a new above-ground space a block away in July 2012. So, if you’re going to be in Chicago sometime in the next nine months, you owe it to yourself to check out this amazing bookstore. It will knock you out…literally. (Those pipes are really low)
