How to WinFranz and Influence People

Freedom with Oprah SealIt is the kind of story of reconciliation and redemption that you might find in a Jonathan Franzen novel. Oprah Winfrey announced this morning that the rumors were true. Her next book club selection is Jonathan Franzen’s Freedom.

As you will recall, Ms. Winfrey chose Franzen’s The Corrections as her book club selection in September 2001. Franzen expressed his discomfort with being named to the club, calling some of her selections “schmaltzy” and “one-dimensional.” Winfrey responded by revoking her selection.

“I’m not a bit surprised (about Winfrey’s choice),” said Lorin Stein, editor of The Paris Review and a former editor at Farrar, Straus & Giroux, which publishes Franzen. “Oprah has always shown great faith in the American reader. In that sense, I think she is a model to those of us in the literature business.”
